This Gallipoli silver proof coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915. It is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality and issued as Australian legal tender with a face value of $5.

Design

The reverse shows the Lone Pine tree in fine detail, inspired by the Lone Pine Memorial in Turkey, with words from the memorial appearing in the background. It is inscribed GALLIPOLI 1915-2015 and FIVE DOLLARS. The obverse carries the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin was designed by A. Baggio.

Remembering the ANZACs

The eight-month Gallipoli campaign that began on 25 April 1915 cost Australia more than 26,000 casualties, of whom about 8,000 died. The battles at The Nek, Lone Pine and Hill 971 form part of the enduring Anzac story of courage and sacrifice. The memorial at Lone Pine records the names of 5,000 Australians and New Zealanders with no known grave.

The Royal Australian Mint limited this Gallipoli silver proof coin to a mintage of 10,000. It comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity, number 0001204, certified by the Mint's Chief Executive Officer, Ross MacDiarmid.
