This Ginger Meggs silver proof coin was struck by The Perth Mint to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Ginger Meggs, Australia's longest running comic strip. It is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in coloured proof quality and issued as Australian legal tender with a face value of $1.

Design

The coloured reverse shows Ginger riding a kangaroo alongside his dog Mike and pet monkey Tony, an homage to the cover of the 22nd Sunbeams Annual, drawn by Bancks in 1945. The design includes the inscription GINGER MEGGS 90th ANNIVERSARY, the Ginger Meggs logo and facsimile signatures of cartoonists Bancks and Chatfield, along with The Perth Mint 'P' mintmark. The obverse carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the 2011 year-date. The coin was designed by Jason Chatfield, the cartoonist who draws Ginger Meggs today.

Ginger Meggs was created by Jimmy Bancks and first appeared in Sydney's Sunday Sun newspaper on 13 November 1921. The cheeky, red-haired twelve-year-old with a healthy disrespect for authority became the quintessential Aussie larrikin, and the strip is now syndicated in more than 30 countries.
